Fandom Five: The Week in Geek Film/TV News, and More!

Usually the FF tracks the biggest fanboy news of the past week. But today we?re looking forward to this weekend. Some pretty monumental things are happening.

1) It?s Hammer Time
Thor: Have you heard it hits theaters today? We checked it out at the U.S. premiere on Monday and we recommend you stop reading this, leave the house and go to the theater. Seriously, just go now. As further motivation, I?ll tell you the movie is enjoying a healthy 79 percent approval rating by critics on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $3.3 million at midnight screening here in North America. We predict it makes between $60 to $70 million this weekend.

2) Best ... Day ... Ever ...
No matter where you are on Saturday, you must stop by a comic book shop. Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day, the annual event designed to bring in new readers. Publishers create new comics for retailers to give away, and in certain cities, the day has become huge event, with writers and artists (and more) stopping by for signing and sketches. Go to freecomicbookday.com and check out the signings section to see who?s showing up where.

3) Batman Auction Begins
Have $100K to splurge on some original art from Frank Miller?s seminal 1980s work The Dark Knight Returns? Check out this weekend?s?Heritage Auctions. Up for grabs is page 10 of Dark Knight #3, the splash page featuring Batman and Robin leaping through the air. The price is?already up to $100K ($119.5K with the buyer?s premium). Other pages are going for a more reasonable $5K to 15K ? for now. There?s a lot of art and more key comics on sale. Will records be set this weekend?

4) Ahoy, Johnny!
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has its world premiere Saturday night at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and we?ll be there in full Jack Sparrow garb (kidding). The studio is shutting down a good chunk of the park for it, but the public will still be able to see Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush and guests ranging from Wayne Brady to Wayne Gretzky. At the last Pirates premiere in 2007, we remember Depp spent more time signing and taking pictures with fans than talking to the assembled press, so don?t be afrad to give a shot.

5) Have we mentioned that Thor hits theaters today?
