Lane Garrison Charged With Domestic Violence

Actor Lane Garrison has been charged with misdemeanor domestic violence following his alleged attack on ex-girlfriend Ashley Mattingly last week.

While it appeared Lane would be cleared as recently as mid-week, the L.A. County District Attorney filed the charges against him late Thursday.

Based on surveillance video which appears to show Lane slapping Ashley Mattingly in the face last Saturday, the D.A. felt he had a case to make.

Garrison insists he did not hit his ex, and says the tape helps his case.

Lane's lawyer says he was merely reaching for his phone at her Beverly Hills apartment and it was not a slap, but evidently the D.A. begs to differ.

Garrison is being held without bail because he's on a parole hold. He was convicted of vehicular DUI manslaughter back in 2007 and went to prison.

If convicted of domestic violence, he faces up to a year in jail, which is very unlikely, however, he could do even more time if his parole is violated.

That prospect is much more likely. Stay tuned.

Interview: John Robb

panama-birdsJohn Robb is an astronautical engineer turned US Air Force Special Operations pilot turned Forrester lead analyst turned startup CTO/COO turned military theorist and author, to oversimplify. His writing has heavily influenced my own (eg you'll find his phrase "open source insurgency" several times in my novel Swarm.) He blogs at Global Guerrillas and edits Resilient Communities. Q: Your writing has focused on three themes: global guerrillas, resilient communities, and, more recently, drone disruption. Could you give the quick nutshell summaries of each of those?
Sure. The general theme of my work is to be at the center of the information flow in the place the world is changing the fastest. I did that four times (tier 1 spec ops, the Internet, Internet Finance, blogging) in the past. I think these topics are where the change is happening fastest now:

This Two-Acre Telescope Powers Science's Search for Dark Energy [Monster Machines]

For lack of a better word, the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) is ginorgantic. (That's the evolved form of ginormous). At 17 million pounds, it is both the world's largest, most technologically-advanced single-dish radio telescope—and the single biggest land-based movable structure on the planet. More »

Coldplay, Rihanna's Official 'Princess Of China' Video Due In May

Rihanna-starring clip currently making the rounds is actually taken from Coldplay's live show, spokesperson confirms.

By now, you've probably seen the video for Coldplay's "Princess of China." It stars Rihanna as a Shiva-esque deity who waves her (many) arms back and forth in time with the tune but strangely does not actually feature Coldplay themselves.

The clip began making the rounds earlier this week and was not only touted as the "official video" but earned raves from fans of both acts. There's only one problem: It is most definitely not the actual "Princess of China" vid.

In fact, it's part of , a video they play during their performance of the song (as several Coldplay aficionados have been pointing out on YouTube). Just to clear up any confusion, we reached out to a spokesperson for the band, who told us in no uncertain terms: "It isn't the official video. ... It is, in fact, a clip that the band are using during their performance of the song on tour."

So there you have it. Of course, this raises the question of just when the real "Princess of China" video will premiere. After all, going by photos RiRi previously tweeted, the clip was filmed back in March. So, once again, we went to Coldplay's rep, who told us that the "Princess" video is still a few weeks away from debuting.

"It won't be finished until the third week of May," the spokesperson said. "It's going to be a minute."

Although Lindsay Lohan has been making strides toward re-entering the acting game and leaving her problem-plagued past behind, she took a minor step backward Wednesday (April 25) when she reportedly arrived late to film herupcoming cameo on "Glee."

According to TMZ, Lohan arrived late on set after she was spotted out on the town in Los Angeles in the wee hours of the morning.

Actress Dot-Marie Jones, who plays Coach Beiste, apparently let the cat out of the bag when she tweeted about an unidentified person's tardiness causing delays in filming. Jones' tweet has since been deleted, but TMZ snagged a copy of it beforehand. "Gonna be a long day!! Some ppl show up late and just throw a wrench in things," Jones reportedly tweeted. "Not cool! I'd rather be an hour early (I was) than 5 minutes late!"

A source connected to the production assured the gossip site that Lohan's late arrival did not cause any delays. Apparently, Lohan filmed her big scenes the day before and was on hand Wednesday to shoot reaction scenes. Director Eric Stoltz was quoted saying that Lohan has been "very professional" during her time on set, nailed all her lines and was very polite to the cast and crew.

Lohan is said to be playing herself as one of three judges at the national choir competition. Her episode is slated to air sometime in May.

After her stint on "Glee," the former Disney star will tackle the role of Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor in the Lifetime TV movie "Liz and Dick," an opportunity Lohan has called an honor.

"I have always admired and had enormous respect for Elizabeth Taylor," Lohan said in the statement. "She was not only an incredible actress but an amazing woman as well. I am very honored to have been asked to play this role."

Are you excited for Lindsay's "Glee" cameo? Let us know in the comments!

DIY hack uses Google Calendar to automate home heating system (video)

Image

Sure, Google Calendar is helpful, but ultimately it's on you to get yourself to that meeting. Wouldn't it be nice if the utility could handle some of the to-do list itself? Hack A Day scoped out an example of it doing just that, after a home owner named Shane posted a video of his DIY system that uses Calendar to control his heater. First, he connected a USB-powered mbed microcontroller with an ARM Cortex M3 processor to the internet via an Ethernet cable. As it happens, the mbed also has a temperature controller and solid state relay for turning the heater on and off. On the software side, he took advantage of a feature in the Google API that let him sync the mbed's network time, with the mbed able to "see" in advance what temp changes are scheduled on the calendar. In other words, if turning on the heater is on the schedule, the mbed system knows it and makes it happen. In a brilliant act of disaster prevention, Shane also tweaked the on-board temperature controller to not go above a certain number of degrees. For more technical details, check out the video below and the photos at the source link.
