Verizon Droid 3 Rumor Roundup: A Look Beneath the Speculation (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | It's on its way! The Droid 3 has just been unveiled in China, and it's already gotten cleared by the FCC here in the States. And while the Chinese will have to wait till this fall to buy it, word on the street has it that we'll get the Droid 3 July 7. (UK Android fans, unfortunately, may not see it at all.)

So what is this little smartphone that's got so many people excited?

The next generation of Droid

The Droid series is Verizon's flagship line of Android smartphones. And while Verizon has introduced a whole slew of alternate Droid models, like the Droid Pro and HTC's Droid Incredible, the premiere Droid itself has seen only one direct sequel: the Droid 2.

The Droid 3 is apparently returning to the phone's roots. It's made by Motorola, the same company that made the original Droid and Droid 2, and it looks like a sleek, stylish version of the original Droid. It'll even have the first Droid's slide-out hardware keyboard (although it hopefully won't have the first Droid's battery cover problem).

Added on are a front-facing camera for video chat and an HDMI port for outputting video to an HDTV. Perhaps, unfortunately, missing is the small touchpad that used to let you position the cursor for editing text.

Does it live up to the original?

The bad news about the Droid 3 is its "puny amount of RAM" and its Pentile qHD display. As the Android Police blog explains, the new display looks extremely fuzzy, displaying yellow and green colors improperly. And while it's got more RAM than my HTC Aria, that's not saying much; the Droid 3's 512 MB is distinctly "2010-esque," and may slow down your phone when you switch between apps or web pages.

On the bright side

The new dual-core processor is the same kind used in the BlackBerry PlayBook, and absolutely destroys the records set by the last generation of smartphones. Benchmarks show it performing significantly better than last year's Nexus One, Droid X, and the HTC Evo. It will also supposedly be able to take 8 megapixel still photos and record 1080p video.

No pricing data have yet been released, but given that it's a top-tier Android smartphone from Verizon, the Droid 3 will probably cost $199.

And on the down side

If the Droid 3 will release July 7, that will coincide with the introduction of new tiered data plans from Verizon, which will replace the company's old unlimited data plans with limited, much more expensive ones. The $30 that used to get you unlimited data, for instance, will only buy you 2 GB per month afterward. Furthermore, the Droid 3 isn't expected to have 4G LTE capability.

The Upshot

With the iPhone 5 rumored to be on its way, it may be best to wait and see what Apple's new smartphone is like before committing to a Droid 3. And with other Android phones out now with more RAM and better displays, this might be one Droid to pass by.

We don't know for sure what it will be like yet, though. That's the nature of rumors.

Asia stocks slip on Fed remarks about US economy (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stock markets followed Wall Street down on Thursday after the Federal Reserve admitted to being caught off guard by recent signs of deterioration in the U.S. economy.

Oil prices fell to near $94 a barrel amid a stronger U.S. dollar.

Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 0.4 percent to 9,594, with shares lower in heavy machinery and equipment makers ? companies likely to feel a slowdown in the global economy more sharply. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. dropped 1.6 percent and Komatsu Ltd. lost 1.4 percent.

But Japanese export shares benefited from a weaker yen, which makes products sent overseas cheaper. Consumer electronics giant Sony Corp. rose 1.1 percent. Isuzu Motors Ltd., which on Wednesday forecast an increase in dividends for the fiscal year through March, rose 3.7 percent.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.8 percent to 21,696.79, with banking shares slumping a day after the China acknowledged that surging inflation will rise again this month ? raising the possibility of more action by China's central bank to tighten monetary policy.

China Construction Bank Ltd., the country's third-biggest commercial lender, slid 2.3 percent. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the world's biggest bank by market value, was down 1.6 percent.

South Korea's Kospi was 0.2 percent lower at 2,058.88 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.5 percent to 4,511.40. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia were also lower, while those in New Zealand and Malaysia were higher.

Investor sentiment slid Wednesday, after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said at a news conference in Washington that some of the problems plaguing the U.S. economy such as weakness in the financial industry and the housing market and "may be stronger and more persistent than we thought."

Earlier, the Fed released a slightly lower forecast for U.S. economic growth this year. The Fed said it now expects the economy to grow between 2.7 percent and 2.9 percent this year, down from its previous estimate of 3.1 percent to 3.3 percent after its last meeting in April.

The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index slumped after Bernanke's cautious remarks about the economy.

The Dow closed down 0.7 percent at 12,109.67. The S&P 500 index fell 0.7 percent to close at 1,287.14. The Nasdaq fell 0.7 percent to 2,669.19.

Even with the dimmer outlook, the Fed pledged no new help to boost the economy. The central bank's $600 billion bond-buying program draws to a close at the end of this month.

Benchmark oil for August delivery was down $1.19 to $94.22 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained $1.24 to settle at $95.41 on Wednesday.

In currencies, the euro dropped to $1.4312 from $1.4376 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar strengthened to 80.48 yen from 80.32 yen.

Terrell Owens And Santana Moss Among 25 NFL Players Connected To Gaming Facility

A number of top NFL talents including Terrell Owens, Santana Moss and Santonio Holmes could face punishment from the league for their involvement with an Alabama bingo and entertainment operation.

At least 25 players invested in the project, now known as Center Stage, according to Jason Silver of Yahoo! Sports. Their investment totaled approximately $20 million. The facility is hoping to re-open late this month or in July.

The facility was originally shut down in February 2010 for using illegal slot-machine lookalikes.

The conflict in player investments arises from the NFL?s hardline stance on gambling. League rules prohibit any player or employee from association with a gaming operation.

The NFL is likely to investigate the matter, but cannot discipline the players involved until the current labor dispute is resolved and a new Collective Bargaining Agreement is reached.

?If it were to be determined that an NFL employee had made an investment in violation of league policy on gambling-related activities, that individual would be directed to withdraw the investment and it would be reviewed for potential discipline,? NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

Unfortunately for the players with money invested this could be a double hit. Not only is the league likely to get involved, but the investment itself doesn?t appear to be a wise one.

?I know four players with $7 million in this thing,? a source told Silver. ?They keep getting told, ?It?s going to re-open,? then it gets pushed back again and again. This is a bad situation for a lot of these players.?

Reuters reports: ?Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been in discussions with the White House about leaving her job next year to become head of the World Bank, sources familiar with the discussions said Thursday.?

Clinton?s longtime communications aide, Philippe Reines, is denying the story and a senior administration official tells TIME the Reuters ?rumor? is false.

But logic and experience supports Reuters and its three sources, who all claim Clinton wants the job. Clinton has said she only wants to serve one term; she?s deeply committed to development; and the current head of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, finishes his term next year.

Normally the leadership of the World Bank and IMF would get sorted out closer to the end of the incumbents? terms. In a complicated but well-choreographed pas-de-deux, the U.S. and Europeans simultaneously decide whom they?ll back for the heads of the two institutions. By tradition, the Europeans get the IMF and the U.S. gets the World Bank.

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' Opens Today On Broadway

However, Adams suffered a stroke in 2005 and died two days later, and Adams' parter David Garfinkle took his place.

Debt has plagued the production due to the large number of technical stunts the story requires. "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" is the costliest musical ever to be produced (at $70 million), even though its original budget was $52 million.

The show originally featured Evan Rachel Wood as Mary Jane Watson and Alan Cumming as the Green Goblin. Both Wood and Cumming left in mid-2010 when the show kept experiencing delays. In an interview in early 2011, Cumming said of his involvement "My GOD, that was a lucky escape. Jesus Christ! Talk about dodging a bullet there!"

Lima mayor: No Christ statue to overlook coast

LIMA, Peru ? The mayor of the Peru's capital may have spoiled President Alan Garcia's plans to erect a huge statue of Jesus similar to Brazil's iconic Christ the Redeemer on a hill overlooking Lima's Pacific coastline.

Lima Mayor Susana Villaran says Garcia didn't ask her before announcing on Friday his intention to have "Christ of the Pacific" put up for a June 29 inauguration. The statue is 22 meters (72 feet) high and would stand atop a 15-meter (49-foot) base.

Villaran has criticized its suitability and lack of originality ? it resembles the famed Rio de Janeiro work.

She told reporters Monday there are plenty of other places to put it besides in her coastal city, such as along the nearly completed Interoceanic highway that would will link Peruvian with Brazilian ports.

Keep in intellect, when the Food & Illegal drug Administration (FDA), reports what is in our drinking water is due to acceptable limits, they?re basing their statement in the assumption that there?s but one chemical contaminant present at any time.

Studies have shown that most municipalities have at the least two and often four pharmaceutical contaminants for their water.

We also know the chemical reaction of medicines do not necessarily react well together. Just take a look in any medicine bottle and see the warning label.

Oh, the FDA also assumes that only people ingesting that moment chemical in acceptable levels, can be an adult. No consideration has been offered for children drinking these contaminants without any thought about the ramifications within the 40, 000 or so mothers using contaminated water to mix their baby?s formula in!

We know that drugs interact with the other person and cause unwanted results. We also know the overuse of antibiotics has got caused resistant strains of deadly bacteria to formulate. Nobody really knows the long-term results of drinking these pharmaceutical pollutants, but one thing is undoubtably, it can?t be good.

Officials do not want to reveal what is there to our drinking water for panic we will over react and demand costly improvements to your drinking water systems. Our esteemed officials might better serve our communities whenever they would reveal the truth about our water and next offer tax credits to those households who do install a home drinking water system.

Read the headlines or watch the news and it?s a little hard to get excited about the prospects of any kind of U.S. real estate. Reports of still-depressed residential and commercial property markets across the U.S. abound, and data certainly don?t support a U-turn anytime soon.

If you?re in private equity, however, it?s a very different story. Blackstone Group, the biggest private-equity firm out there, noted recently that it expects more deals in distressed U.S. commercial real estate and the fact that European banks are starting to sell troubled property assets represents a ?sizable? opportunity.

They?re not alone. A recent report by Brookwood Financial Partners (click here to download) notes: that it?s not a matter of if, but when, the U.S. commercial real estate market in particular will recover, and how quickly the recovery will unfold.

The report, written by Brookwood Financial founder and CEO Thomas Trkla, notes that the U.S. real estate market is entering a period ?in which there will be historic opportunities to acquire high-quality commercial properties and loans from distressed sellers in selected regions of the U.S. at significant discounts.?

He further notes, ?Although we are still experiencing the longest recession since the Great Depression, it is not a matter of if the market will recover, but when and at what pace. Over the next six to 24 months, we believe substantial opportunities will arise to acquire fundamentally sound properties at substantial discounts to previous peak pricing and current replacement cost.?

Why?

For starters, the financial stress commercial real estate developers are currently under is pretty heavy. Depressed values and more stringent loan terms have put the squeeze on a lot of players, according to the report, which as the chart below shows has made getting financing tough. According to the report, some $1.3 trillion of commercial mortgages are scheduled to expire over the next four years.

The onslaught of maturities coming due from loans originated at the height of the market will make refinancing difficult due to equity gaps, unrealistic initial underwriting assumptions and stricter lending standards, including lower loan-to-value ratios, the report says.

?As a result, we believe that there will be a marked increase in the number of properties for sale at discounts of greater than 50%,? says Trkla.

What?s more, there?s more opportunity coming down the commercial real estate pike, in particular acquiring both performing and non-performing loans at significant discounts ? from banks and others ill-equipped to be operators of real estate, especially those who have been postponing mortgage defaults by extending loans or modifying loan terms in a bid to stave off a fire sale. The chart below shows the correlation between U.S. commercial property prices and net flows of new mortgages.

Of course, the premise of the good-opportunity story includes at least the beginnings of a tentative U.S. economic recovery, which at this stage most economists and the Federal Reserve would agree isn?t quite happening. Indeed, the opportunities will depend on sellers being forced into the market where few capital resources are available ? leaving ?tremendous? opportunities for prudent, patient investors.

It will also depend on how one defines ?opportunity?. The most true adage for any kind of investment is that it?s only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. Even at 50% off, the jury is still out on whether buyers ? private equity shops or anybody else ? will be willing to line up to pay half-off for something that was overvalued, over-financed and over-leveraged to begin with.

There are always at least two sides to any bet, and history will tell whether Blackstone, Brookwood and others are correct. One thing that?s clear is that the outlook and the opportunities will depend on what happens with the economy.

We wonder what the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Treasury, the White House or any other properties in the D.C. area might currently be worth ? or perhaps the building that houses the U.S. mint.

More people are dying from pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), and this could be associated with parallel rises in obesity rates, researchers from the University of Adelaide Roger Byard wrote in the Medical Journal of Australia

Professor Roger Byard and co-author explain that while focus should continue on illnesses and conditions linked to obesity, such as cardiac disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), and diabetes mellitus, doctors should also concentrate on PTE.

The researchers gathered data on the number of sudden deaths in South Australia subject to coronial autopsies from 2000 to 2009; they selected cases where the people died from PTE.

They noticed that the death rate from PTE rose gradually over time, despite annual fluctuations, from 3.59% to 3.71% (2000-2004 and 2005-2009 respectively).

The average BMI (body mass index) of those who died of PTE was 29.6, compared to 25.9 among people in the control groups; those who died from something else.

Byard said:

?If PTE is conclusively found to be associated with BMI, there may be significant effects on
hospital diagnostic services, coronial forensic investigation units and public expenditure in
the future.

Laughter still best medicine for famed funnyman-Rodeo-GoTeamsGo ...

Flint Rasmussen, the clown prince of rodeo, grinned and said that no, he never has had a bad day.

And he was serious as a heart attack.

"The tiring thing about my job is I'm not allowed to have bad days," he said with a smile.

The famous funnyman was in Great Falls Thursday to speak before a meeting of the local Pachyderm Club. The Choteau native, one of the most celebrated clowns in the history of rodeo, took the opportunity to crack wise and talk politics.

He also offered a little insight into what a life-threatening experience can do for one's attitude.

It was two years ago in March that he suffered a heart attack. Rasmussen, 43, underwent surgery and was hospitalized in Great Falls.

Talk about a bad day.

"My wife (Katie) used to get mad," said Rasmussen, who admits his cheerful attitude wasn't always readily apparent at home. "She said, 'We always get the grouchy Flint and everybody else gets the funny one.' But you know what? Then I had a heart attack. And now I realize that those bad days just aren't worth it.

"Things are way better now, and she'll vouch for that."

NFL Players Association, A CALL TO MEN and the Verizon Foundation Launch 'Training Camps for Life' to Coach Teens About Healthy and Respectful Relationships

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., June 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 600 New Jersey teens gathered at Rutgers University on Saturday (June 4) for the launch of Training Camps for Life, a partnership of the NFL Players Association, A CALL TO MEN and the Verizon Foundation.

The half-day, NFL-star-studded event at Rutgers University addressed topics such as overcoming adversity, decisions and consequences, and healthy teen relationships ? a critical addition to the Training Camps for Life agenda. The event was the first of 12 sessions that will be held across the country this year. They are funded through a $250,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to A CALL TO MEN, an internationally recognized men's organization addressing domestic and sexual violence prevention.

Studies have shown that one in three teens experiences relationship abuse and nearly half ? 47 percent ? report having done something that compromised their values to appease their partner.

"As a professional athlete I have to build healthy, respectful relationships every day," said Chris Canty, NFL defensive tackle and founder of the Chris Canty Foundation. "Through Training Camps for Life, we have an opportunity to educate and empower teens to respect themselves and others."

At the core of this education program is the notion of a healthy and respectful manhood. A CALL TO MEN will work with Training Camps for Life participants to challenge the attitudes and beliefs about what it means to be a man. Teens will examine popular culture through a lens of respect and equality, and dissect lyrics of current hip-hop tracks to understand the concept of male privilege. They will also learn to identify the nuances of abuse ? like flirting vs. harassment ? and understand when and how to seek help.

Male and female high school students attending the sessions will have the option to take the LIVERESPECT pledge at www.liverespect.org , a commitment to end teen relationship abuse and speak out against domestic violence.

"These camps, designed to help teens build strong values and important life skills, are a perfect setting to start building a coalition of men and boys to help break the cycle of violence," said Rose Stuckey Kirk, Verizon Foundation president. "With this important message of non-violence coming from the players the children idolize, our vision of a world without domestic fear will begin to take root."

Following each Training Camp for Life, A CALL TO MEN will visit the high schools of the participating student to continue the training with an in-class curriculum designed to:

* Help teens heal from past abuse.
* Raise expectations for equality and respect in relationships.
* Increase safety on school campuses.
* Promote youth leadership in violence prevention.

"Each Training Camp for Life has the potential to shift societal norms about relationships and what it means to become a man," said Ted Bunch, co-founder of A CALL TO MEN. "The in-school curriculum will dive deep into these issues so that students walk away with a renewed concept of manhood, a thorough understanding of what is and isn't abuse, how to get help, and how to help others."

Partnering with the NFL Players Association on the Training Camps for Life program is part of the Verizon Foundation's strategy to engage men and teens in helping end domestic violence. Additional camps will be held starting in the fall in Pittsburgh, Tampa, Boston, Dallas, San Diego, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.
