Randi Hutter Epstein, MD, MPH: The DMV Tried to Get Me to 'Just Say No!' to Organ Donation

In a New York Times piece this month, Pauline Chen, a liver transplant surgeon, writes about checking the "yes" box on her renewed driver's license, committing herself to organ donation should she get into a tragic accident. Even this experienced physician said the question took her off-guard for a split second. One minute she was going through the mundane process of paperwork, the next minute contemplating her own death.

Everyone knows that our country suffers from a dearth of organs for those who desperately need them, particularly organs from minorities. Years ago, I wrote about the savvy promotional schemes to get more people to think about organ donation and to check the "yes" box. And yet, what happens in committee meetings that discuss clever marketing strategies is often very different from what happens in the real world.

Chen points to a study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. It found that when people were asked to watch a five-minute video on their iPhones about organ donation before entering the DMV, donations increased compared to those who were not offered the video.

Oddly, when I went to renew my license, I obediently checked "yes." I'm hoping I'll be keeping my organs for the long run, but felt it was my civic duty to offer them up should the worst happen. And yet, when I went to hand in my forms, the woman behind the counter said:

"You realize you checked 'yes' for organ donation. Are you sure you really want to do that?"

I replied that I did.

"Really? Wow. You can change your mind."

I realize that a lot of people have issues with organ donation. But I think those who are promoting it, need to think about those on the frontlines and make sure their worthy efforts aren't being cobbled at the very last moment.

ITU: There Are Now Over 1 Billion Users Of Social Media Worldwide, Most On Mobile

What does it mean when Facebook says it has 901 million monthly active users on its network? Texas had more commercial real estate spending in 2011 than any other state, and helped make 2011 the first year since the recession that office, industrial and retail buildings have posted gains since the recession started.

Texas development accounted for $7.9 billion in spending and 150,102 jobs supported, according to a new report from NAIOP, the commercial real estate development association.

The study found U.S. construction spending grew more than 12 percent between 2010 and 2011, to $92.3 billion. More than 238 million square feet were built in 2011.

?2011 was a transition year for the U.S. economy and the construction sector,? said report author and economist Stephen Fuller, director of the Center for Regional Analysis at the George Mason University, in a press release.??The U.S. economy shifted from a federal stimulus to private-sector driven growth pattern and construction spending grew accordingly.?

Forecasts call for project construction spending to increase through 2014.

'Dancing With The Stars' Latin Heartthrob William Levy Leads The Pack

Levy earned a perfect score on Monday night's show; two contestants will be eliminated tonight.

Tuesday night's (May 8) telecast of "Dancing With the Stars" will eliminate two celebrities, so the heat was on during Monday night's performances. And for the most part, the dancers delivered. The remaining six couples did their requisite ballroom dance and then had to come back and dance in groups of three for the second dance, which also was scored.

At the top of the list was Latin soap star and heartthrob William Levy and his partner Cheryl Burke, who earned an impressive perfect score for their foxtrot. The judges thought the pair was sexy and the epitome of perfection. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba told them that their performance was "like a superhot, sexy Pink Panther." Hard-to-please head judge Len Goodman told Levy, "There was care in technique and flare in the movement!" They scored 30/30, which was added to their second dance's score for a grand total of 57/60.

Here's how the others fared:

Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower
The young Disney star danced the foxtrot, and unlike in previous weeks, the judges were thoroughly impressed — and it showed in how they scored the youngest couple in the competition. Bruno Tonioli told Fegan that watching him dance was like watching a young Mickey Rooney. He added that they were like "the sweetest of sweethearts. What you've done in a week is incredible." 29/30 plus the second dance score: 56/60.

Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd
The NFL star tangoed with his pro partner, and the judges loved how he aggressively attacked the performance. Inaba said that she wanted a bit more dramatic flair but ultimately thought that Driver was "in the zone!" 27/30 for a total of 55/60.

Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas
The opera singer danced the Viennese waltz, and the former judges' favorite didn't impress them all that much this week. Still, they applauded her for her lines, while noting her mess-ups. Inaba told her, "You lost your balance. You weren't on your footing." 26/30 for a total of 55/60.

Maria Menounos and Derek Hough
The TV host danced the Viennese waltz, and the judges praised her so much that she was driven to tears. In particular, Tonioli's comment that the performance was "heavenly fluidity" made her cry. Between wiping away tears, Menounos said, "I love this dance and I love the music. And I love dancing with him," referring to Hough. 28/30 for a total of 53/60.

Melissa Gilbert and Maks Chmerkovskiy
The actress did the foxtrot, and the judges said that her spotty footwork was worth noting. Still, Tonioli thought she kept it together more so than she has for any other performance this season. 27/30 for a total of 51/60.

Following tonight's double elimination, only four couples will be left to compete on the show next week.

Norton One also streamlines the process of installing protection on your devices.

Another difference crops up if you want to protect more than five devices. To add a sixth device with Norton One, you pay one-fifth of the five-license price pro-rated over the time remaining in your subscription. For example, adding a sixth device halfway into the subscription would cost about $15.

Norton 360 Everywhere doesn't offer pro-rated licensing. To protect more than five devices you need another subscription. The?price?of?oil?plunged to its lowest level in nearly six months Friday, falling below $100 per barrel for the first time since February. A drop in gasoline?prices?can't be far behind.

It's a welcome trend for motorists, with the summer driving season just around the corner. And it eases some pressure on the U.S. economy, which has shown only agonizingly slow growth in the nearly three years since the Great Recession ended.

Oil?fell $4.05, or 4 percent, to $98.49, after a weak U.S. jobs report offered the latest evidence that the global economy is weakening, possibly reducing demand for?oil. At the same time, there is mounting evidence that world?oil?supplies are growing.

"The jobs report was the coup de grace," said Judith Dwarkin, chief energy economist at ITG Investment Research. "But it's hard to see how?prices?could have stayed on the boil given ample supplies and continued economic uncertainty."

For the week,?oil?fell more than $6 and is now about $12 below its February high. U.S. gasoline?prices?have fallen to $3.80 per gallon from a peak of $3.94 in early April.

Now they could go as low as $3.50 per gallon by July 4, according to Tom Kloza, Chief?Oil?Analyst at theOil?Price?Information Service.

Tony Wei, a mechanical engineer from Piscataway, NJ., will welcome lower?prices. He travels 100 miles every day to and from his job in Morris County, N.J. He's also planning a 500-mile trip to Canada and a 400-mile trip to southwest Virginia this summer in his Honda Accord.

"Definitely, I'm going to notice it," he said. "I buy so much gas."

The picture of the?oil?market is the reverse of just a few months ago. Then, world?oil?demand looked to be rising quickly at the same time that world supplies were threatened by a host of small production outages and the potential for drastically reduced production from Iran, the world's third-biggest exporter.

Those developments raised the prospect that world supplies would be at their most tenuous just as the summer driving season arrived in the developed world. The?price?of U.S. benchmark?oil?rose to about $110. The?price?for international?oil?used to make most of the gasoline in the U.S. spiked even higher, to $128 per barrel.

Gasoline?prices?in the U.S. appeared to be on track to soar past $4 per gallon nationwide, another burden for U.S. consumers already suffering from high unemployment and pitiful wage growth.

We're not sure exactly what the FBI's standard issue kit consists of, but we imagine it has more than a few bits of secret tech. These screen grabs from this week's Fringe, however, would have us believe that the rogue agents like to pick up their tabs with what looks like Google Wallet. We can clearly see a Sprint-branded Galaxy Nexus being used to for a not-so-undercover financial transaction. At least it looks like the agents might have had an upgrade since we last saw them around these parts.

A Mother Is a Story With Neither Beginning Nor End

Divided into seven sections?each named after a key concept of Winnicott?s theories of infant development?Are You My Mother? flouts writing-school rules. It lengthily recounts Bechdel?s dreams and her therapy sessions, which revolve around what it was like to live with parents who were narcissistically self-involved. More startlingly, Bechdel tells us that as she writes chapters, she gives them to her mother, Helen, for comment. Then she writes about what her mother says, or, more tellingly, doesn?t say. In one of the very first scenes in the book, Alison and Helen are talking on the phone when Helen rather passive-aggressively praises a New Yorker article about the narcissism of memoir-writing (?Isn?t he the one who beat you for that prize?? she asks, of the author), and Bechdel reflects on her ?fear that Mom will find this memoir about her ?angry.? ? The stakes are all laid out, if implicitly: The daughter?s never-ending desire for the mother?s approval, on the one hand, and her recognition, on the other, of the mother?s failures and limitations, on the other. (Perhaps most painfully, Helen has never accepted her daughter?s lesbianism.)

Wicked Lasers, makers of the eye-meltingly powerful S3 Krypton laser has developed a $100 attachment for the same that will bring a few not-so-little boys' dreams true. The ahem LaserSaber add-on takes the pin-sharp beam of light from the company's S3 range of lasers, and sends it down a 32" polycarbonate "blade". A so called magnetic gravity system imitates the powering-up and down of those other famous sabers, but they stopped at adding sound effects. Bear in mind, you're still dealing with imperial levels of light here, so dueling is most definitely not recommended, but if you want the nearest thing to the real deal, remember, May the 5th we told you.
