Exotic spots compete for shoots

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' shot three days in Puerto Rico, but most of the rest in Hawaii.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
In February, Pinewood Studios broke ground for the building of its first Latin American outpost, the Pinewood Indomina Studios in Juan Dolio, 40 miles east of the capital of Santo Domingo. The facility will include more than 50,000 sq. ft. of soundstage space and 160,000-plus sq. ft. of associated production support facilities, as well as a massive exterior water tank on the 35-acre site. A 25% film tax credit is still pending approval, which may come possibly before the summer. What the island doesn't have is Puerto Rico's experienced bilingual crew and first-rate productioninfrastructure and talent. HAWAII
It was a tossup between Puerto Rico and Hawaii for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," but Hawaii's lush jungles won out over Puerto Rico's great beaches since most of the action was taking place inland. Hawaii grants 15%-20% in production income tax credits with an $8 million cap per production. Hawaii Film Studio offers a 16,500 sq. ft. soundproof stage. The Film Offices of the Hawaiian Islands coordinates tax incentives, permits and production services.BORA BORA, French Polynesia
Film France's tax rebates for international productions (Trip) are available to the Gallic line producers of international pics shooting in French Polynesia as long as the projects include elements related to French culture, heritage or territory. Eligible productions can claim a 20% rebate on their expenses, capped at $5.4 million. "Couples Retreat" is probably the most recent Hollywood pic to shoot in Bora Bora. On the TV side, the Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort served as the backdrop for the finale of last season's "The Bachelorette." Neither production was eligible for the rebate.
