When Is It Time to Buy a New Computer? | Golds-Press UK

Article by Joe Palver

Have you found yourself wondering lately if it?s time to replace your current computer system with a new computer? Deciding when it?s time to buy a new computer is not quite as easy as it might seem.Computer technology continues to change rapidly. Processor performance increases, RAM become less expensive, operating systems from both Microsoft and Apple improve and change versions, and new devices and connections such as rewritable DVDs and HMDI come along. At the same time laptop computers, and now netbook computers, have put more and more features into smaller and lighter weight portable computers.

Eventually the thought of upgrading or replacing your computer system gathers momentum. Pertinent questions include: how does this evolving technology fit within your budget; do you really need any of this new technology; is your current computer adequate; could you just upgrade your current computer without having to buy a whole new system; and is now a good time to buy a new computer?

Key factors that may set you on the upgrade/replace path are: your current computer is having significant problems (crashes, slow performance, old version of Windows, etc.); you have a desire to use hardware or software technology that your current system can?t handle effectively; or you just plain want a faster computer.

Another reason for replacing your current computer may be increased mobility. If you currently have a desktop or tower (floor standing) computer but you want a portable (laptop/netbook) computer, the choice is relatively clear ? buy a new computer. No amount of upgrading, troubleshooting, or waiting will turn your desktop computer into a laptop computer.

Laptop, and more recently, netbook computer manufacturers are producing systems that are lighter, faster, and more full-featured than ever before. While there are a significant number of lightweight and ultra-light weight systems for people on the go, there is also a growing class of laptop computers that have been given a label of ?desktop replacement? systems. These laptops are geared towards user who want the power of a desktop system but still want to be able to have a system with some mobility.

Assuming that portability isn?t the main question, what other reasons are most compelling for purchasing a new computer? Some of the technology changes that may make upgrading your computing environment desirable include:

1. New Windows Versions: The newest version of Windows adds many new features and capabilities but can also require greater CPU power and larger amounts of RAM.

2. New Applications and digital media can demand substantial processing power, memory, and data storage capabilities that can overwhelm some older computers.

3. New Hardware Devices: Newer technology has become available in the last few years including rewriteable DVD drives (DVD+/-RW), high capacity hard drives ? up to 2,000GB (2TB) for desktop computers and 500GB for laptop computers, and higher performance video processors.

4. New Connectivity Options: Device connections such as USB 2.0, and faster wireless networks supporting the 802.11n standard.

5. Overall System Performance: Beyond faster CPUs and more memory, newer systems also allow the CPU to talk to main memory (RAM) and to the graphics processor at a dramatically faster rate.

6. Running Multiple Programs More Efficiently: All those programs that load when you boot your system and run in the background require system resources such as memory, processing power, and data storage.

7. Battery Life: Longer battery life on laptop and netbook computers.

Still not sure about upgrading? You are not alone. Your situation may be a case of ?If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.? If your system is running fine, provides a level of performance acceptable to you, and meets all of your current needs, stick with it.
